Google Penguin Update Announced

Google Penguin is the name given to an April 2012 algorithm update that helps companies avoid link schemes. A link scheme basically takes out any real benefit to search engine users, as links are generated in the name of altering the perception of a site’s quality by ranking higher on the search engine.

A link scheme can happen for a number of reasons, including making money. Another way to describe link schemes is called Black-Hat SEO (also called search engine spam/poisoning, or “spamdexing”). Generally, any manipulation of the search engine indexing system falls into these categories, and Google doesn’t like them.

When Penguin was released in 2012, Google sniffed out spam on 3% of searches, meaning 3% of all content retrievable through their search engine was considered malicious. Later Penguin morphed into penalizing pages with too many ads, and has continued seeking out questionable pages to create the truest search engine possible.

Google alters its algorithm hundreds of times per year, so for an update to be announced and receive a good deal of attention is relatively uncommon usually substantial. Penguin 4.0 will be the latest and greatest from the tech giant, and >some expect the algorithm to function in real time, hopefully eradicating spam from search engines entirely. There is an element of mystery to Penguin updates, as launch dates and specifics are never outlined before. So, as with anything pertaining to search engines, we’ll keep you posted as soon as we hear something.
