SteerPoint believes in fighting internet piracy and going after counterfeiters, but SOPA and PIPA will do more harm than good.
SOPA and PIPA would allow the blocking of web sites without due process or prior judicial oversight. Search engines could be required to remove blacklisted web sites from their results. Also, many internet companies that allow users to post information would have to review everything users post or risk facing expensive litigation. That’s why many of the sites that you rely on every day, such as Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Craigslist, Facebook, and Twitter, have posted protests and links to let you inform your Congresspersons about you opposition to these bills.
In addition to these problems, SOPA and PIPA will not even be effective at stopping piracy and counterfeiting. Rogue web sites engaged in these activities will just change their URLs and continue violating the law and intellectual property rights, while legitimate sites that cannot so easily move will suffer the consequences of these vague and overreaching bills. There are already governmental entities that are able to fight piracy and counterfeiting without damaging and inhibiting the web sites that we rely on every day.
