There’s nothing more likely to elicit a riotous response on the internet than when a big tech company changes their logo. And when Instagram mixed up theirs’ recently, well…oof…it didn’t go so hot.
The tech giant switched their very recognizable polaroid camera, adorned with lenses and red, yellow, green and blue stripes neatly tucked into the top-left corner of the logo. It was beautiful,
elegant, simple, fun, eye-catching and — most importantly — it was their brand. Every site and app worth their salt had links to Instagram, and now those links and buttons are replaced with something that looks…well, it’s hard to describe. It’s a square, with the outline of a camera in white atop of a setting sun (maybe?). Predominantly, the colors changed from modern, relatable brown tones to an overwhelmingly pink palate. We think it’s awful, and we wish they would revert back to the old-timey camera existed in our space last week.
This seismic internet event now exists on the pantheon of social media fails. Facebook has fallen guilty of this a few times, such as when they introduced new reaction buttons and messaging from the first time. Twitter constantly is known for tripping over its own feet. Instagram recently committed the same crime Twitter did when they mixed up their algorithm to give users a different order of posts. The reaction is pure madness. But in the end, everything turns out okay.
It’s like if you take your golden retriever to the groomer and it comes back blue, what can your really do? You’ll still end up loving the thing, of course. And you’ll still love Instagram, too. Even though the look has changed, Instagram users will still make it their go-to app to share pictures. That isn’t changing anytime soon.
